Scapula Pulls
Scapula pulls are a scapular activation and strengthening drill done hanging from the bar. Instead of bending the elbows, you only raise and lower the scapulae with arms fully straight. Essential for shoulder health and efficient vertical pulling.
Why they matter
Most beginners pull only with the arms and skip scapular activation. Without initial scapular depression and retraction, the pull is inefficient and can stress the shoulder. Scapula pulls isolate and groove this motor pattern.
Execution
Hang from the bar with a pronated grip, arms fully extended. Without bending the elbows even a millimeter, lift the body 3-5 cm by actively depressing the scapulae (as if tucking the shoulder blades into your back pockets). Hold 1 second at the top. Lower into a passive hang. Repeat.
Correct feeling
The back muscles (lats) should initiate the movement—not the arms.
Frequency
Do them at the start of every pull-up session as neurological activation.
