Pull

Typewriter Pull-ups

Advanced Level 78/100

Typewriter pull-ups are the pulling version of typewriter push-ups. At the top, you slide laterally along the bar (like a typewriter carriage) before lowering, creating intense isometric tension in the lat on the side you slide toward.

EquipmentPull-up bar

Execution

Very wide grip. Pull until the chin clears the bar. WITHOUT lowering, slide laterally until one arm is nearly straight and the head is near the other hand. Slide to the other side. Then lower. That is one full rep.

Isometric demand

In the slid position, the lat on the bent-arm side holds body weight at max contraction—an isometric stimulus hard to replicate otherwise.

Difficulty

Requires holding the top of a pull-up with mostly one arm during the slide. Only for athletes with a solid pull-up base.

Combo

Excellent paired with archer pull-ups in the same training mesocycle.
